Ladies (Especially Atlanta, Nashville, Memphis, Charleston, Miami, and Orlando),
Please be aware that ALL CIPP registrations expire on August 31. ALL of them. AND that the USA Rugby eligibility deadline for CIPP registration for Championships is September 15. This deadline applies to the South DII Championship, USA Rugby DI Championship, and National DII Championship. Note: This is two weeks earlier than last year. Does this give you much time to get ALL of your players registered? No. You must be diligent in getting all of your players memberships renewed.
I found out on Saturday that USA Rugby voted to open the registration two weeks earlier (August 15) in order to give us more time. Whew! This is only four days away, so I suggest getting mobilized now. Take advantage of batch registration if possible as it will give you greater control over getting individual players registered.
FYI. Please note my email address has changed.

Men’s Club Sevens Championships Kick Off to Thrilling Start in San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO – Following an action-packed afternoon of competition, the field has been narrowed to eight teams left to duke it out for the 2008 title, as day one of the USA Rugby Men’s Club Sevens Championships wrapped up at Rocca Field on Treasure Island .
Still alive in the quarterfinal race for the coveted Cup are the No . 8 seeded Gentlemen of Aspen, which finished atop the Pool A competition and face Daytona Beach when play resumes at 9 a . m . Sunday morning . No . 5 seed Northern Virginia (NOVA) put up a strong showing, outscoring its opponents 101-14 and moves on to meet the Maryland Exiles in the quarterfinals .
The top finishers in Pool C the Denver Barbarians, which have gained a quarterfinal Cup berth every year since 2001, hope to continue their momentum past Boston Rugby Club tomorrow morning, while the Chicago Lions look to defend their 2007 title but must first need to move past some stiff opposition from Belmont Shore, the leaders of the Pool B draw .
The Bowl semifinalists are also set in place, with Old Mission Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC) earning a spot against Olympic Club with a big 41-14 win over Austin Elite . After struggling a bit early in the day, Olympic Club recovered in the bowl quarterfinals to cap off the day with a 31-5 win over Mission .
Local hosts San Francisco Golden Gate will take on Ohio-based Scioto Valley in the second Bowl Semi-final . The hometown heroes from SFGG redeemed themselves with a convincing 31-12 victory of New York ’s Old Blue at the end of the day, while Scioto Valley made its way to the Bowl semis via its 26-17 win over the Chicago Griffins .
Read on below for a complete breakdown of the Pool rounds in Day 1 at San Francisco ’s Rocca Field .
Pool A
The Gentlemen of Aspen led the pack in Pool A, emerging with three wins overall, steamrolling past OMBAC in a harsh 26-5 upset and the Chicago Griffins 45-7 before edging out the defending champion Chicago Lions by just one try in a 17-12 final . Meanwhile, the Lions just barely slipped into the second position, following a first round win over Windy City rivals the Chicago Griffins, 17-14, and a frustrating tie versus OMBAC .
After just missing out on the title to the Chicago Lions last year, perennial championship contenders OMBAC struggled to get momentum going, notching their first win in Round 3 against the Griffins to earn a place in the Bowl quarterfinals . The No . 16 seeded Griffins also had a disappointing day on the pitch, going 0-3 in the pool rounds before missing out to Scioto Valley in the Bowl quarters .
Pool B
No . 2 seed overall, last year’s Bowl victors the Belmont Shore Tigers breezed by the competition, going 3-0 in pool play, with double digit victories over each of its competitors to move on against the Chicago Lions for a spot in the Cup Semis .
Joining Belmont Shore in the quarterfinal round is Daytona Beach , which capped off day 1 with wins over both SciotoValley and Austin Elite . Scioto Valley notched its only “W” versus Austin , while the Texas squad was held winless in the pool rounds .
Pool C
True to form, familiar championship presence the Denver Barbarians swept the Pool C competition . Led by, Maximo de Achaval, who kicked and touched down for 32 points today, the Barbos easily bumped off the Maryland Exiles 26-12 in the opening round, before defeating Olympic Club 35-12, and Old Blue 26-5 .
The Maryland Exiles drew a frustrating 19-19 tie versus Old Blue in Round two, but held off a late scoring surge from Olympic Club to pick up their only win of the day in round three . After going 1-2 in the pool rounds, the OC gets a shot at redemption tomorrow morning in the Bowl semi-finals against OMBAC . Meanwhile, Old Blue heads home without a win .
Pool D
The No . 5 seed overall, and top Mid-Atlantic side Northern Virginia (NOVA) came out with a vengeance in day 1, turning up the jets to easily sweep the Pool D field of competitors . Finishing in the second position was Boston RFC, which dealt the hosts from San Francisco Golden Gate a last minute 24-19 upset in the opening round and breezed past Mission 36-7 .
After going 1-2 before its home crowd, SFGG still remains in pursuit of some hardware, earning a spot in the Bowl quarterfinal, with a 31-12 win over Old Blue . Meanwhile, fellow Pacific Coast club Mission , goes home lacking in the win category .

Thought I would send you a
report on this past weekends
results from the South Florida
Select Side U - 20 teams results
in the Pittsburgh Challenge Cup.
First and foremost Coaches Bill
Marts, Don Stramanak and Jeff
Oxenrider all should be
congratulated for a job well
done. The team finished in
second place.
This is the third year that
these gentlemen took it upon
their own initiative to put a
traveling squad together and
compete against other upper
level teams throughout the
country. Because of their
respective efforts the very
first year drew attention to
Florida Youth rugby. The result
was some of our athletes were
chosen to go to U.S.A. Rugby
camps and several have now
played for the U-17,18 and 19
U.S.A. Junior Eagles Teams
respectively, playing both
abroad and here in the United
States.
Several of our teams have now
had players recognized as stand
out players and they include,
Trojans, Brevard Red Eyes,
Naples and now Weston. Those
players that have been selected
and played at the Junior Eagle
level and or recently selected
are Cameron Dolan; Brandon Grey;
Brian Hussey; Shane Young; Wes
Haughton; Jamie Penca and
recently invited to a camp Alex
Tucci.
There have been several others
that have been invited to camps
to compete at the highest
levels. In Florida’s inaugural
year they placed last, the
second year, fourth and this
year placed second. Each year
with major improvements noted by
many.
The coaches had several
practices with the 26 player
roster that traveled to
Pittsburgh and they gelled as a
unit and an observer may have
thought that this team had
played together as a unit all
season long. They all worked
well and in unison while they
competed for top honors at the
tournament. The coaches were
able to move players in many
positions and each athlete
performed well and complimented
and supported each other in each
game.
South Florida soundly defeated
Minnesota in the first game and
served as a terrific beginning
as that team defeated Florida
one year ago in Baltimore. They
went on to the second game and
demonstrated good sound
fundamentals against EPRU
(Eastern Penn Rugby Union) and
defeated them which brought the
first day to a close with a 2 -
0 record.
The second day of competition
made it very clear that South
Florida needed to win in order
to play for a title match.
Florida was matched up against
Met New York for the first match
of the day which they won before
going on to lose a close final
to North Carolina.
Players from all the various
teams that participated put in
an outstanding effort. Those
teams were from Trojan Rugby;
NorthEast Nomads; Weston Rugby;
Jupiter Rugby; Tampa Bay
Pelicans; North Broward Prep and
Naples Bears. Some of the other
players were from F.S.U.; U.C.F.;
Edison College, and F.G.C.U. .
An example of the impact that
the tour had on both the
players, coaches and fans can be
summed up in a letter written by
the President of the Delaware
Rugby Foundation Jerry Humphrey
to the organizer Kurt
Mockenhaupt of the Potomac Rugby
Foundation when he said, ”A
special nod, in my opinion,
should go to both Florida and
Carolina programs. The parental
support shown as well as the
concentration on solid rugby
tradition by these two groups
makes me want to do more. I was
especially proud to see the
Florida team line up to cheer
for a fallen opponent on the
main field." Florida displayed
both class and great
sportsmanship in spite of
several obstacles. Each young
man had terrific learning
lessons and all of the young men
showed mature attitudes
throughout the tour. Florida
Rugby can be proud of their
teams !
The effort and experience that
the coaches displayed in their
handling of all the details of a
traveling side and the demeanor
and the appreciation that the
players responded with was a
terrific example of the strides
and gains for Florida Youth
Rugby in our short four year
history. Each player got to
experience a higher level of
rugby while others got a sense
of what the game has to offer
besides playing for their
individual teams. The boys
bonded and by the end of the
tournament one would think that
these young men have known each
other their entire lives. Each
gained a new love for the game
and a respect for the athletes
that play it.
The venue that we played at was
the same location that the
U.S.A.Rugby held the High School
Championships. It was held at
the Pittsburgh Harlequins
Founders Field. They were
tremendous hosts and have
awesome facilities.
Additionally, our South Florida
Select Side U- 20 team was also
the first and probably the last
Rugby team to ever play and
practice on the Pittsburgh
Steelers playing field in their
home stadium. They also got to
tour the facility and experience
the players locker rooms as well
as the private sky boxes and
press rooms. They now know what
it is like to play in a stadium
that sits in excess of 63,000
fans. They got to run the field,
which no other group ever has
been privileged to do. The
coaches thank Pittsburgh
Steelers defensive tackle Chris
Hoke for giving the Rugby team
special access and privileges
while visiting. The tour was a
complete success and the players
that traveled walk away with
many terrific memories.
A special thanks to the
following for their support of
our tour: Sunshine Supplemental
Eductional Services (Tutoring),
Larry Fox U.S.A.Rugby Coach,
Naples Hammerheads Men’s Rugby
Club; Ft. Lauderdale Men’s club;
Ft. Lauderdale Rugby Foundation;
U.S.A.Rugby South; Florida Rugby
Union; Trojan Rugby Club, Naples

Harlequin Rugby Club and Parents
of their High School team;

Thanks to all for another awesome Fear 7's and I think we may do it again next year.
Congratulations to all of the teams and folks that participated, sponsored, attended, and lent a helping hand so we could bring you the 34th Annual Cape Fear 7's Rugby Tournament.
We're looking forward to doing this again in '09 and I've already reserved Ogden Park for July 4-5.
Well done to NOVA and to the British Army Marchwood Dolphins side on a superb Men's Championship final. It was the best I've seen in my 14 consecutive years at this tourney, and some of the old timers tell me it was the best one ever, period. It was no surprise to see NOVA win a very close, 24-17, match and I'm very excited to see what next year has in store for Fear.
Also, the Women's Division's again played outstanding rugby and it was the NOVA Piranhas over the Northeast Select in another very close match.
Just a little footnote about the Women's Divisions:
Several of the Brits from the Marchwood Dolphins commented to me how impressive the Women played here and that it was better then the Women's rugby they've grown accustomed to seeing in Europe.
We're already working very hard to bring you the best rugby possible for the
35th Annual Cape Fear 7's Rugby Tournament and we look forward to seeing you here!
Good Luck, best wishes and may the rugby gods be with you.
(Please email me your comments & suggestions because Fear 7's is as much your tournament, and our goal is to always make it better and better and your input is important . . .)
The South 7's Championship is up
for grabs. This is just like
any other social 7's tournament,
except that the winner gets a
shot at the National Title in
San Francisco California August
9th and 10th. Any men's college
or club team is eligible to
participate, unlimited entries!
