South Collegiate Men’s Camp and Selections in Savannah

Forty players and four coaching staff were in attendance in Statesboro, GA, for the 2004 camp. This year, to overcome some logistical problems, instead of holding a three-day camp in May, two teams were entered in the Savannah rugby tournament over the weekend of 13th/14th March. A two-hour training session and game plan session was held on the Friday evening under the lights at the Georgia Southern University fields. Thanks go to Atlanta Renegades and Clemson University for loaning us two sets of jerseys for the weekend.

Both sides acquitted themselves extremely well on the Saturday going undefeated, and not having their line crossed all day with excellent defense. Both sides scored a combined total of 194 points and only conceding fourteen (two converted penalty tries).

Team A accounted for Bowling Green University “B” 72-0 and Virginia Tech 26-0.
Team B accounted for George Mason University 55-0 and University of Virginia 41-14.

This meant that the South All-Stars took first and second position in the men’s collegiate bracket. As some players still have matrix games to play amongst other considerations it was unanimously decided to forego playing a final of two 25-minute halves on the Sunday between us. All the players that attended were worthy of the title “South All-Star” as everyone played extremely well. Some difficult decisions had to be made on Saturday in selecting a squad to travel to Boulder, CO, in June for the TAU’s.
