2007 Women’s Report

CLUB:

Division I

One DI Team the Atlanta Harlequins (Ranked 4th going into championship)

Going through a transition/rebuilding and looking for new coach

Suffering from lack of DI Competition in South and surrounding areas

Finished 8th Nationally (likely on the way down unless competition issue solved)

New Orleans Women trying to re-join South for 2008

Some buzz that Orlando Women may move to DI in 2008

Division II

In 2007 there was women’s DII rugby of varying levels of activity representing several

different clubs. All clubs are represented with contact information on the web page.

Teams looking for other opportunities to play competitive rugby prior to South

Championship.

Four teams participated in the South Playoffs and Championships and finished in this

order. All results have been sent to Webmaster for posting on web page.

1. Orlando – 3rd @ DII Nationals

2. Miami/Naples – 4th @ DII Nationals

3. Nashville

4. Memphis

Orlando hosted Women’s DII Nationals tournament in Sanford, FL in November at the

same venue as Women’s DI Nationals was held at – great job and savings for South

teams

For 2008 the WDII Championships will run as follows:

Will be held on October 4-5, 2008. Location to be determined by USARS bid

process.

Each LAU may submit two teams as entrants. Selection of those teams is

determined by the LAU.

Estimated eight teams to participate in Championship weekend.

Selected team names to be submitted to USARS by Sept 15, 2008.

Top two teams will progress to WDII National (www.wdiirugby.org)

COLLEGIATE:

Division I

Clemson – South DI #1 Seed

Went 0 – 2 @ Round of Sixteen in big losses

Squad made up of several Freshmen and Sophomores - Rebuilding

Appalachian State – South DI #2 Seed

Went 0 – 2 @ Round of Sixteen in big losses

Won South qualifier in tie break against UF (more likely South #2 Seed)

Traveled to South and Round of 16 without coach (player coached)

Overall National Seeding Results – South lost one seed; remaining seed at #16

Division II

College of Charleston – South DII #1 Seed (8th Nationally)

Went 0 – 2 @ Round of 8 (on big loss; on close loss)

Overall National Seeding Results – South moves up to #5th Seed

ALL STARS:

South U-23 All Star Championships 2007 Finish/2008 Ranking:

1) Florida

2) North Carolina

3) Georgia

4) Palmetto

5) MidSouth – Pulled out of Championships by LAU Officers

(Players/Teams not Compliant)

6) Deep South – Pulled out of Championships by DS Women’s Director

(Insufficient Numbers)

Rebuilding Year:

South U-23 – Lost both games at NASC

Suffered from player attrition through selection process

South Women – Went 1 – 1 at NASC, Lost to West in OT to move to Tier 1

New Coach Stuart Low stepped in at last minute to select and coach squad

Poor turnout at two South tryouts

No Eagle participation

South 7’s – Went 3 – 1 loosing in Semi Finals; Finished 3rd Overall

South U-19 –

Went 1 – 1 at NASC with 1st Win as a squad

Hosted in Tennessee by South (2nd year)

USA South Coaches

 

USA Rugby South is looking to fill the positions for all it’s Women’s select side programs for 2008/2009 and as such seeks applications from qualified coaches for the positions of

 

Senior side – Head Coach & Assistant Coach(s)

U23 – Head Coach & Assistant Coach(s)

U19 – Head Coach & Assistant Coach(s)

Sevens – Head Coach & Assistant Coach(s)

 

All positions will report directly to the Director of Women’s coaching and will be responsible for.

 

1.                  Select side player identification, recruitment and retention.

2.                  Designing and implementing a select side coaching program that compliments the overall program outlined for the development of South Women’s rugby.

3.                  Modeling, teaching and reinforcing ethical behavior throughout the program

4.                  Leading and supervising the team and staff at all camps, matches and tournaments.

5.                  Maintaining highest personal level of coaching expertise through continuous improvement.

6.                  Observing and Analyzing player and team performance within program and sessions to ensure optimum performance is maintained.

7.                  Evolving players to achieve their full potential – includes developing players to attain national squad status..

8.                  Works with manager to plan annual budgets and deliver programs within planned cost.

 

Minimum requirement for applicants.

 

1.                  USA Rugby certified coach

2.                  Minimum 3 years coaching experience – preferably in Women’s rugby.

3.                  Submission of 1 page proposal in support of application outlining;

a.     Personal rugby coaching philosophy

b.     Proposed plan on how applicant will enhance USA Rugby South Women’s program

c.   Personal coaching continuous development plan

Ladies,
 
The Women's DII National Championship was held this past weekend. From all reports, the South rocked the house. Orlando and Naples/Coconut Grove were able to improve our seeding to numbers 3 and 4! For all the game scores visit www.wdiirugby. org.
 
A big round of applause and many congratulations to the players, coaches, supporters, and administrators from Orlando and Naples/Coconut Grove. Keep up the good work!

As announced at Women's South Championships, the South Women's Tryout Camp will be hosted on Sat. Dec. 1, and Sun. Dec. 2 in Atlanta, GA area.

Sat. 12/1/07 Schedule:

8.30AM - Registration
9:00AM - Start camp - introductions, brief on purpose of weekend
9:40AM - Warm up
10AM - NOON - Ball skills & tackle/poaching
NOON to 1PM - Lunch (may be provided on-site)
1 - 3PM - Split forwards and backs
               Forwards - line out and scrum
               Backs - lines of run, back play
3PM- 5PM - Breakdown area/continuity (ruck, maul, offload)
 
7 - 8:30PMALL South players/coach meeting - to review 2008 schedule, what is expected of players, coaches, admin etc. Expect this at Host Hotel.
 

9PM-10PM - Coach meeting - any potential south select side coaches.

Sunday 12/2/07 Schedule:
9AM - 1130AM -  Defensive patterns  & breakdown defense.
11.30 - 12.30AM - Game awareness & organization (Team runs)
12.30 - 1.30 - Lunch
1.30 - 2.30 - Controlled scrimmage.
2.30 - Close 
 
NOTE:  as of right now, there is NO formal fitness testing; however sessions will be intense and coaches WILL be assessing player fitness & conditioning during the course of the weekend! 
 
 

Some final notes for this weekend's Camp:
- Bring running shoes and/or moulded shoes, in addition to your regular boots. Ground is very hard. Forwards may only want to wear their regular boots when we split up backs & forwards
 
- Bring both a light and dark shirt
 
- Bring your favorite water bottle -- we'll have Gatorade and water, but no cups
 
- Forecast is for a high of 67, low of 47... only 10% chance of rain
 
Transportation to / from Pitch & Hotel:
- If you're staying at the Crowne Plaza host hotel and need a roommate... OR...if your group could handle another person to help cut your costs, let me know.
 
- Anyone with space in their car  --OR--  anyone needing a ride to pitch, meet in Hotel lobby at 8:15AM.  We'll try to use the Staff vehicle to make a run to the pitch. If you have space in your vehicle, please call me so we can coordinate.
 
Registration:
- Registration will be set-up under the Pavillion about 30 meters from the pitch
 
- Please fill out & bring the attached "Player Profile" sheet, and your $30 entry fee (checks can be made out to "USA Rugby South")
 
- We'll need to take mug shots after you sign in -- pictures will be taken in groups of 4's
 
COACHES:  Stuart will hold a short briefing with you starting at 8:30 while we do Player Registration
 
ALL:  Don't forget the meeting at 7PM for everyone... held at the host hotel.  It should answer your questions about the upcoming season, schedule, etc...

Congratulations to Orlando and Naples/Coconut Grove who move on to the National Women's DII Championship (www.wdiirugby. org). They will have the advantage of competing on USARS home turf in Sanford FL on November 10/11 against DII teams representing the MidWest, MidAtlantic, and Northeast territories. Rock their world ladies!
 
In an effort to continually improve this event, we would appreciate any feedback regarding the Championships. We will use this to make next year's Championship even better. Also, please remember that the bids to host next year's event (Oct 4/5, 2008) are due by Nov 17, 2007 to Gary Kent. If everyone wants to know where the tournament will be (more than a month ahead of time) get your bids in NOW!
